Description
How is it that performing the same actions leads some people to be bound to material existence while others are released from it? Shree Krishna answers this in this verse: those who act without attachment and without seeking material rewards are never bound by karma. In contrast, those driven by the desire for material pleasures become entangled in the consequences of their actions.
The word “yukt” means “united in consciousness with God” or “not seeking any reward other than the purification of the heart.” Yukt individuals renounce the desire for the rewards of their actions and engage in works solely for self-purification. As a result, they soon attain divine consciousness and eternal beatitude.
Conversely, “ayukt” refers to those who are not united with God in consciousness and seek mundane rewards that do not benefit the soul. Such individuals, driven by cravings, lustfully desire the fruits of their actions. The reactions of work performed in this state of consciousness bind these ayukt individuals to samsara, the cycle of life and death.
