Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta Chapter 2 shlok 27

“The only things certain in life are death and taxes.” Death is the most inevitable aspect of life, often considered the greatest fear by psychologists and recognized in Patanjali’s Yog Darśhan as abhiniveśh—the instinctive urge to survive at any cost.

In the Mahabharat, there’s an illustrative incident during the Pandavas’ exile in the forest. When the brothers sought water from a well, a yakṣha, actually the celestial God of death, Yamraj in disguise, presented a series of questions. Yudhishthir answered them all, including the inquiry about the most surprising thing in the world: “At every moment, people are dying. Those who are alive witness this phenomenon, yet they do not contemplate that one day they too will have to die. What can be more astonishing than this?”

Shree Krishna emphasizes in this verse that life inevitably leads to death, and a wise person does not lament over the unavoidable.
