Those who wisely practice the science of work without attachment can transcend both good and bad reactions in this lifetime. Therefore, endeavor to attain Yog, which is the art of skillful work done in proper consciousness.
When people hear about the principles of karm-yog, they often wonder if relinquishing attachment to results will diminish their performance. Shree Krishna explains that working without personal motivation doesn’t diminish the quality of our work; instead, we become even more skillful. Consider the example of a dedicated surgeon who performs surgeries with equanimity, regardless of whether the patient survives or not. Operating with a sense of duty and without attachment to outcomes, the surgeon doesn’t feel guilty if the patient doesn’t make it. However, if the surgeon’s own child needs an operation, their attachment to the outcome may hinder their ability to perform skillfully, leading them to seek help from another surgeon. This illustrates how attachment to results can adversely affect performance.
